Using WEAI+ to Explore Gender Equity and Empowerment

One reproducible pipeline from customs to farm-gate—so subsidy debates share the same numbers.

Making Complex Evidence Clear. Visual reporting and decision tools that translate research on trade, gender, and information systems into usable insight for partners.

Subsidy debates were gridlocked by incompatible spreadsheets. We built a single source of truth with explicit lineage from customs declarations to farm-gate price monitors.

Gender equity and empowerment are critical for agricultural development. The Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI+) provides a framework for measuring empowerment across domains such as decision-making, access to resources, and leadership. This study applies WEAI+ to explore gender equity and empowerment in rural Ghana. The broader challenge is that women often face structural barriers in agriculture, limiting their participation and benefits. Empowerment is multidimensional, requiring attention to social, economic, and cultural factors. This research situates WEAI+ within the broader discourse on gender and rural development.

Background

Advancing through the data

Gender equity and empowerment are critical for agricultural development. The Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI+) provides a framework for measuring empowerment across domains such as decision-making, access to resources, and leadership. This study applies WEAI+ to explore gender equity and empowerment in rural Ghana. The broader challenge is that women often face structural barriers in agriculture, limiting their participation and benefits. Empowerment is multidimensional, requiring attention to social, economic, and cultural factors. This research situates WEAI+ within the broader discourse on gender and rural development.

Field evidence underpinning data visualization research.

Research Approach

Household survey data was collected using the WEAI+ framework. Econometric models were applied to measure empowerment indicators across domains. Qualitative interviews provided narratives of women’s experiences in agriculture. Comparative analysis was conducted between men and women to capture gender disparities. This dual approach ensured findings were both statistically rigorous and contextually grounded.

Key findings from this study include:

  • Women faced barriers in decision-making and resource access.
  • Empowerment varied across regions and households.
  • WEAI+ provided a comprehensive framework for measuring empowerment.
  • Gender equity improved household welfare outcomes.
