Energy poverty — defined as limited access to reliable and affordable energy — remains a persistent challenge in rural Ghana. Households often rely on traditional fuels such as firewood and charcoal, which are inefficient and environmentally harmful. At the same time, agricultural strategies such as crop diversification have been promoted to stabilize incomes and reduce vulnerability. This study explores the link between diversification and energy poverty, asking whether diversified cropping systems can indirectly improve energy access. The rationale is that diversified farming reduces income volatility, enabling households to invest in energy solutions. By spreading risk across multiple crops, farmers are less exposed to market shocks and climate variability. This stability can translate into improved capacity to afford electricity, clean cooking fuels, and other energy services. The study situates diversification within the broader discourse on sustainable development, connecting agriculture to energy transitions.

Research Approach
